A Paepaero is a breadstick dipped in chocolate at one end, and guess what? When you line up four Paepaeros it looks like 11 11... November 11th!
Unlike most holidays which have some significance, Paepaero Day is a holiday that was invented by Lotte - the Korean equivalent of Asda. It is a purely consumerist holiday that has no meaning or relevance and surprise surprise... the Koreans bloody love it!
The supermarket Paepaero displays easily out do any Christmas display I've ever seen at home... literally aisles and aisles of chocolate dipped breadsticks. Couples exchange Paepaeros, friends give each other Paepaeros, students give their teachers Paepaeros... it's consumer maddness!!
Thing is... breadsticks were surely invented to be eaten with hummous or dip. Chocolate breadsticks?? Dry mouth alert!
